Understanding Fractions

Fractions represent a part of a whole. They consist of a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). The numerator tells us how many parts we have, and the denominator tells us the total number of equal parts. For example, in the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator. This means we have 3 parts out of a total of 4 equal parts.

Addition/Subtraction:

If the fractions have the same denominator, simply add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same.

Example:

2/5 + 3/5 = 5/5 = 1

If the fractions have different denominators, you first have to find a common denominator, and then add or subtract the numerators.

Example:

2/5 + 1/2 = 4/10 + 5/10 = 9/10

Multiplication:

To multiply fractions, simply multiply the numerators and the denominators.

Example:

2/3 * 4/5 = 8/15

Division:

To divide fractions, you multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor (flip the fraction).

Example:

3/4 ÷ 2/3 = 3/4 * 3/2 = 9/8 = 1 1/8
